Title: Giving up your rights to humbly serve others Text: Philippians 2:1-11 Philippians Philippians2:5 2:5 (NIV84) (NIV84) 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus By: Pastor Micah Adamson January 29, 2016

Introduction 2016 has been a year of transition. In April of 2016 I Finished my B.A. in Ministry with a Pastoral Emphasis by Distance Education from Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, Alberta, Canada after 10 years in the program. Was ordained, called, and installed as the Senior Pastor at NHCC, in Kent, WA after being the part time Associate Pastor for 7 years. Am still working part time for Sonata Software at Microsoft where I was full time for 6 years. Began preaching 4 weeks in a row with Pastor Dan giving me two weeks off of extra prep time. Why we do what we do at NHCC

You may have noticed this in Sermons: How to find a church, Back to the beginning: Genesis, Ten Commandments, Lords Prayer, Apostles Creed, 1-2 Peter Adult Sunday School Class Topics: Fall: Back to the beginning: Early church history Who is Jesus? (Nicene Creed) Why we do what we do at NHCC

Summer: Missionaries NHCC supports Michael & Marie Currier Bible Translation, USA Titus & Stephanie Folden At Risk Children, Ecuador James & Janelle Junior College Ministry, Bellingham, WA Rob & Martine Karch Evangelizing the French speaking world Dick & Judy Rothlisberger Prison ministry, Kent, WA Tim & Muriel Teusink Medical ministry, France (*only missionaries not to visit NHCC this year) MTW Summer Mission Trip, Colville, WA Other: Gideons (Bible distribution), Operation Christmas Child & OM:

History of NHCC How to prepare a testimony Statement of faith: What we believe is worth fighting for = Level 1 How we govern ourselves as a local body = Level 2 The things we choose not to fight over = Level 3 Rights and Responsibilities of a church member Sunday Service involvement = Preview - Sermon - Review Sunday School involvement (and opportunities to teach kids) Small Group involvement = Home Fellowship Groups

Other ministries = Worship Team, Mens/Womens Ministry, Prayer Chain Personal Bible study = Bible Reading and Bible Memory Plans Personal Evangelism World Missions Website How we should do everything we do at NHCC: With same attitude as Jesus Christ Philippians 2:1-5 (NIV84) 1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being

one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus Jesus Fourfold Revolution Philippians 2:5-11 (NIV84) 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place 9 and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Jesus is LORD before He is our example If you dont trust in Jesus to save you from sin by His sinless life, sacrificial death, and saving resurrection, then trying to copy Jesus will NOT do you any eternal

good. Think of how humble Jesus was. Jesus had the right to not be bothered by anything that bothers us as humans. Jesus had the right to perfect comfort and peace in heaven, with everyone obeying Him. Without ceasing to be God, Jesus gave up the rights to all this to become a man. But, Jesus gave up even more to die for us! He gave up the right not to be associated with sin, not to be talked bad about, be hurt or killed. Jesus voluntarily accepted a death He didnt deserve to give us eternal life we dont deserve. Gratitude: Grace vs. Karma

Karma = Justice = getting what you deserve for whatever good or bad that you do. Injustice = getting bad things that you dont deserve or seeing good things go to bad people. Grace = getting good things we dont deserve. Mercy = not getting the bad things we deserve for what weve done. Paul is using a how much more argument based on the grace weve received from Jesus. If Jesus, who deserved everyone to treat Him well, was willing to humbly serve us Then how much more should we, who deserve punishment, be willing to humbly serve others in response to what weve received from Jesus. Application

Questions for reflection: Do we realize how much we have been given by Jesus? Do we realize what Jesus has spared us from? Are we grateful for what Jesus has given us? Are we grateful for what Jesus has spared us from? Do we see how much Jesus deserved and yet didnt demand? Does Jesus attitude of being willing to give up what He rightfully deserved describe us? Examples of humbly serving each other in the life of NHCC by giving up our rights Remember that honoring and praising Jesus for having

always done what is right perfectly when we dont is the primary way we honor God. I want to encourage you that I see evidence that virtually everyone at NHCC is giving up their rights to humbly serve others in several practical ways that you may not notice. I know that church is not the only place you serve. How everyone at NHCC is giving up their rights to humbly serve others The last two the Ss from my outline of 1 Peter Submission and Suffering sound a lot like being obedient unto death. Im not sure if our inconveniences to serve one another count as suffering, but maybe at little.

Anytime we serve each other it will require us to sacrifice to put others first. Perhaps we could summarize our goal in looking out for the interests of others as: sharing the suffering, sharing the service, or sharing the sacrifice.
